Sidewinder's Journal March 28 & 29 Driving along Interstate 70 east heading home to Wellsville I am reminded again how long the it takes to reach Kansas after leaving Denver. It seems as though I have already driven days. I no longer can see the familiar outlines of the Foothills in Boulder nor the snow covered peaks of the mountains behind them. Colorado has mountains, Kansas doesn't right? So that I can't see mountains, I should be in Kansas. Then why do the signs say that I still have a bazillion miles before I reach Colby. It seems as though anytime I am driving between Colorado and Wellsville it is bittersweet. Most of the time when this happens, I am leaving one and going to the other. This one is no different. The mission this time is to safely deliver the dog and truck to their summer homes where I will leave them while I hike. Ivan (the best dog in the world) is in the back and acting a bit skittish. He is probably wondering were we are headed. His trips in the car usually aren't that long and when they are, he isn't crowded into the back of the truck with a bunch of boxes. He knows something is amiss but can't quite figure it out. At least he is better than on his first long distance trips though. He lays down now but gets to look around everytime the pitch the tires make on the road surfaces changes. I am sure going to miss having him around the last few weeks before I leave Boulder. I am sure the house won't have the same energy without him. I must be getting excited about the trip. Loren's parents are coming out to Boulder in a couple of weeks with the RV. Every trailer or RV I pass gets a good long stare as I pass it. I don't ever remember doing looking so curiously at them in any of my past travels. I wonder if theirs is anything like the one I pass. I imagine the exciting places the people in them are going or are returning from. I try to picture how the boxes of food and the piles of gear in the front room of my house will ever fit into it. I swerve to avoid drifting off the road since I am staring at the RV.
